45 cm dishwasher in a 50 cm cabinet

Hello,

I am new here and want to start right away with a question.

I am currently planning a kitchen for my new apartment. I have already decided on the Ikea Faktum kitchen with Abstrakt fronts. The difficulty in planning is, of course, the space, especially since I also have to accommodate the washing machine in the kitchen, as unfortunately I have no other choice. Therefore, I would like to fully integrate the washing machine into the kitchen. Unfortunately, it cannot be avoided that right next to the washing machine the fully integrated dishwasher (45 cm) must also be installed. However, I had concerns about the stability (two built-in appliances side by side, and the washing machine does cause quite some vibrations). The consultant at Ikea suggested that I could also install the 45 cm dishwasher in a 50 cm cabinet. Maybe someone can confirm if this really works? Does a fully integrated dishwasher really fit into a 50 cm carcass? And can I easily screw a 50 cm front onto the door, or will this cause other problems/disadvantages?

Best regards,

Christoph

Hi, I’m also currently struggling with the dishwasher problem.... The dishwashers at IKEA are never built in, meaning they don’t stand inside a cabinet but rather on the floor between two cabinets. So you just have to leave 50 cm of space between two cabinets, place the 45 cm dishwasher centered in that space, cover the approximately 2.5 cm on the left and right with a panel (that’s how the consultant explained it to me), and then screw the 50 cm door in front of it.

If I’m not mistaken, this version is also displayed at Vienna North (where all the electrical appliances are lined up) – if you are in Vienna, you can check it out there.

Hope I could help! Best, Verena

Hello,

As a future Berliner, I even have 4 branches to choose from...
I will have to drop by a few times anyway to get some inspiration (and to solve technical problems). My problem is that the built-in washing machine is right next to the dishwasher on the left, so there is no cabinet wall where I could attach such a panel. Or can it also be attached to the dishwasher? And as I said, the whole thing doesn’t seem very stable to me. That’s why it would be quite convenient if it would work with the 50 cm carcass....

Last night, I also noticed in my preliminary plan that my wall cabinets are not aligned symmetrically with the base units (only the total width matches). It looks quite okay in the drawing, but how does it look in reality? I am afraid that it looks visually awkward....

Best regards

Christoph

Hi,

as mentioned above, there are no carcasses for dishwashers. These always stand (with few exceptions) on their own feet and on the floor. Basically, it's quite simple. Leave a niche of 50.5cm-51(!)cm between the washing machine and the sink cabinet. Then put the 45cm dishwasher in and attach the 50cm door. The front does not have to leave a gap with the sink cabinet; 0.5cm-1cm of air to the washing machine should be enough so that it doesn't hit when spinning. At the front, you will then have a nice flat front, only when you open the dishwasher will you see the gap between the washing machine and dishwasher.

Regarding your question about the symmetry of the wall and base cabinets, you should try to plan the kitchen "tidy". That means the washing machine and base cabinets should be aligned. And above all, please be careful not to bring too many different sizes in. Better to stick to, for example, many 60cm cabinets than sometimes 30, then 50, then 80, etc. That just looks restless and makes the most beautiful kitchen look cheap. You can override the alignment of washing machine and base cabinets with horizontal wall cabinets. In doing so, please always take the same size if possible or if mixed has to be done, then "pleasing planning" like e.g. 70, 92, 70, etc. If you then perhaps decide on a different color or a lot of glass for these cabinets, the kitchen will really be an eye-catcher.

Well then, have fun with the planning, I hope I could help you a bit.

Yes, definitely, thank you very much! I had also already planned two-tone, with the abstract fronts it almost suggests itself.

Unfortunately, I have to say the conditions are not ideal. The tile backsplash is senselessly long (I can’t use it fully, otherwise the kitchen door won’t open completely... if only it were fully extended, instead it ends somewhere between the maximum possible length of the kitchen run and the corner/door). On the side with the stove connection, the tile backsplash is completely missing... sockets for the upper cabinets are also missing...

Hm,

at least for the tile backsplash, you could have wall panels in the countertop color installed along the entire length of the kitchen. That way, the missing backsplash won’t be noticeable in the important spots and it looks classy. Affordable price-wise, have your [EH] calculate it for you. Because of the missing sockets, only an electrician can help you and possibly "daisy-chain" another one from an existing outlet. Otherwise, extension cords are your only option.
